Small Town USA: The Image and Impact of the American Small Town in Literature, Film and Popular Culture
The American small town, whether a rural community or a fledgling suburb, has played a key role in the development of our country and has inspired novelists, filmmakers, poets, artists and songwriters to either extol its virtues or decry its shortcomings. Our seminar will focus on classic tales that depict small towns and their citizens as they go about their daily routines, resolve crises and respond to national emergencies such as World War II. We will take a look at classic films and other works that feature the comedic, the mysterious, the charming, and the inspirational aspects of small town life, as portrayed by a variety of talented observers. Instructor: Jack Rhodes.
