Artist statement
The series I have currently been working on is a memory recording of my excursions near water. While exploring most places, my head is usually down, investigating what lies at my feet. The word "landscape" to me is not solely that grand vista often seen on postcards, but instead what we train our eye to see. These images are my landscapes.
With this series I have chosen to work in ink, using a stippling or pointilism technique. This process is time consuming, yet meditative, facilitating a return to the memory, allowing it to evolve until each work is complete. I hope to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity for the things that this land offers up which often goes unnoticed. Look down and you will see.
Biography
Growing up, I was introduced to art through my mother. Even with four kids, my mom found the time to attend her guild meetings. She was pretty much a self-taught artist. My father carved her out a spot in our crowded basement for a make-shift studio, right next to his workbench. I remember the heady smell of oil paint and turpentine.
Art followed me throughout my years in high school, giving me a place to seek refuge. Later, I attended the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, majoring in drawing in painting. While in Illinois, I also received a Botanical Art certificate from the Morton Arboretum.
Currently living here in Wisconsin, I show my work in a few galleries, sell my art online, enter numerous shows, win an occasional award and sometimes teach a demo. All the while, art continues to be my refuge.
