Madison artist James Dietz creates furniture that mingles its forms with sculptural elements. Dietz works primarily in wood and seeks to explore its intrinsic natural qualities. He also combines those qualities with refined design concepts to arrive at art forms that lend themselves to everyday use. He respects the tree, often leaving some rough evidence of the wood's origin, but his machining, painting and patterning bring art and nature together.
Dietz received his M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1996. In 1998, Dietz' furniture was shown at the 10th Annual Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. His art has been shown at the Elvehjem Museum of Art in Madison as well as the Madison Art Center and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, where he had a solo show in December, 2000.
