		<title>Between Fences Smithsonian traveling exhibition</title>
		<link>http://www.portalwisconsin.org/calendar.cfm?rid=38731</link>
<description>We live between fences. Thousands of types have been invented, millions of miles have been produced, and countless rivals have seized post, rail, panel, and wire to stake their claims. Curated by Gregory K. Dreicer for the Smithsonian&#39;s Museum on Main Street Program, &#34;Between Fences&#34; exhibition focuses on every region of the United States. Its subjects include the defining of home, farm, and factory; the settling of the United States; the closing of the range in the South and its meaning to former slaves; and the making of fences, including a look at why Abe Lincoln became known as a rail splitter. It examines human relationships on an expending scale: neighbor versus neighbor; gated communities; and the Mexican and Canadian borders of the U.S. Additionally, a special section called &#34;Wisconsin Fences&#34; was designed by the Wisconsin Humanities Council and explores six place-based stories, all relating to the ways we think about and manage land in our state, both historically and today. Some of the sections include &#8220;Forced Out, Fenced In&#8221; about wolves in the north woods, &#8220;Highways: Barriers and Bridges&#8221; about sprawl in Milwaukee County, and &#8220;Public Waters, Private Land&#8221; about resource management in areas under pressure from development. The Midwestern Regional Wisconsin Photographic History Project will also be on display at the Clear Lake Community Center. -- Clear Lake Community Center, Clear Lake</description>
