Magnus Opus: Masters of the Figure from the Permanent Collection Exhibition
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Miller Art Museum presents Magnus Opus: Masters of the Figure from the Permanent Collection, a compelling exhibition featuring 25 works from the permanent collection that explores the figure not merely as subject, but as an enduring artistic practice rooted in observation, empathy, and connection.
At its heart is Sabbath at Sea (1991) by Charles L. Peterson—a major new acquisition generously donated by Janet and Peter Nixon. The painting, originally exhibited at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut, reflects Peterson’s gift for storytelling, technical mastery, and humanity. Accompanied by rarely seen preparatory sketches from the artist’s personal archive, it offers an intimate glimpse into Peterson’s artistic process.
Guest curated by Suzanne Rose, Magnus Opus explores the power of repetition, memory, and gesture in figurative art. “This exhibition is a celebration of mastery born from devotion,” says Rose. “It’s a tribute to artists who return again and again to the figure in pursuit of truth, connection, and empathy.”
