Healing Words: Poetry and True Story in Medical Settings In an "Academy Evening" presentation delivered in Madison Oct. 11, 2005, Dr. Arthur Derse and Ellen Kort discuss how poetry and nonfiction narrative can help in the ethical training of physicians as well as help doctors and patients better cope with illness. Derse is a professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin and president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. Kort served as Wisconsin's first poet laureate. In this clip, Gregg Williard of Madison reads his story "Let's Get Lost." The story won the writing contest "The Plot Quickens," co-sponsored in 2003 by the Wisconsin Book Festival and The Capital Times. Writers were given 24 hours to complete their assignment: to write a story of 2,000 words or less based on artist William Gedney's photograph, "Girl Lost in Thought at Fast Food Counter, Coney Island, New York" (c. 1979).
