Artist statement
I am inspired when an ordinary scene or object is transformed into something glorious. Maybe it's a striking combination of colors or textures, or a compelling pattern of contrasts. It could be the relationship of a person to nature. Most often, it,s the effect of sunlight,
deepening a color here, making an edge disappear there, that motivates me to paint.

For me, making a painting has two phases. The creation phase begins when I am excited by a particular combination of textures, shapes and colors. Painting allows me to delve deeper into the relationships, studying every nuance and finding an arrangement that both communicates my original idea and makes a satisfying composition. This phase is very self-indulgent as I lose myself in the process, but it is also hard work and involves making difficult choices.

The connecting phase concerns my responsibility to the viewer. I strive to communicate my joy of experience, both of observation and of creation. When I succeed, the painting reminds the viewer of a meaningful experience of his own.
