Artist statement
I paint from the experiences I've had traveling across the nation. From the time I was a youngster through two years of college, I spent summers on my uncle's dairy farm. I have a fondness for old barns and rural scenes. I've spent time on the West Coast painting boats, harbors, foggy mountains and rain-gorged streams. Where most people see a beautiful landscape, I see a potential new painting.
My technique is a combination of realism and impressionism and, by adding an overall mood, I create paintings for all to enjoy.
Biography
Born and raised on the high desert in Lakeview, Oregon, Larry Johnson studied architecture at the University of Oregon then went on to the L.A. Art Center for commercial illustration.
Even as a commercial artist, he painted wildlife and landscapes. From 1965 to 1983, he was recognized as one of the nation's top artists.
A job transfer allowed a move to Wisconsin to be nearer his wife's family and to explore new painting subjects.
Now retired, Johnson travels throughout the country finding new subjects and teaching watercolor and acrylic workshops.
