Artist statement
My obsessive-compulsive nature magnetizes me to the "organization of things." The way this planet is organized is directly related to how everything smaller is organized. The same rules apply to the immense and the infinitesimal.
The movement of Earth's tectonic plates has been a favorite image in my drawings. I use plates as metaphors for people, ideas, civilizations and ways of life. They move into, over and under each other with destructive force, illustrating the various casualties and rebirths that occur as the planet recycles.
My interest has turned to disgust as we all live to see the ills that humans as a species have caused and continue to cause. The destruction of our own human friendly environment is not something to think about later; every species is essential to maintain a global balance. I cannot help but to include a message of cause and effect in all of my work.
Be it a personal environment or the global one, my work looks at the cycle of events that define our environment. I attempt to bring these cycles into a human context by including human parts to describe the various players. We all know how much one broken toe can affect our entire body; we don’t think about how important that one toe is to our balance until it’s broken. The planet we all live and die on is just as alive as we are; it changes, grows, moves. It has a much longer, slower and more complex life than any animal or plant species.
Biography
In 2006, due to a physical obsession for mark making, Juliet Jaeger, a Milwaukee native, earned her BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in Printmaking and Drawing. This obsessive energy currently occurs within her studio in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood. Her work springs from a conceptual preoccupation with science, specifically geology and biology. Her drawings, prints and books often feature a message of environmental conservation. Jaeger is also working in the field of paper conservation with James E. Twomey, M.S., owner of Book Restoration Co. in Kenosha, Wis. Her concentration is the restoration of 19th-century wall maps.
