Artist statement
What is the pure essence of a subject? What is the texture? What is the feeling? What are the layers and depth of the vision when someone experiences being in a place or looking at a scene? My paintings try to express just this essence. Most of the subject matter is landscape and ranges from pure abstraction to expressionism. I feel a deep connectedness to the Wisconsin environment and spend many hours outdoors walking, canoeing and kayaking. With no particular agenda other than to observe, at times I'm impressed by light, at other times texture, and other times color. I take these impressions back to the studio and begin to paint.
My predominant medium is transparent watercolor on paper. The fluidity and movement of this medium matches the fluidity and movement in water, skies, light and wind, such a large portion of the landscape.
I invite the viewer into my mood.
I invite the viewer to find these essences themselves as they experience the vastness that Wisconsin landscape encompasses. And finally, I invite the viewer to find a poetic connectedness to the earth.
Biography
I am a mother, dog walker, long distance swimmer and artist with a deep connectedness to nature. I attended art school as a young woman. Between the ages of 25 and 46, I slowly ceased painting and got caught up in the basic struggles of making a living, falling in and out of love and caring for children. When I hit age 45, I was confronted by the fragility of life in the form of a skirmish with cancer, and the 9/11 tragedy. This glimpse of mortality lead me to a two week conversation between myself and God in the canyons of Nevada. A direct result of this conversation was a return to my art and painting.
