Artist statement
With each new piece of fabric I dye, a story is revealed in the folds of manipulated cloth where colors pool with deep intensity and soften to expose the origins of their hues. This is the beginning of the story, and with each layer of images, time unfolds. Ginkgo leaves fell here, ferns grew over there, and a spotted salamander bridges the time between both. Each process of dying, printing, painting, drawing and stitching, builds an environment for the flora and fauna I love; the habitat I want to keep safe for me and to share with others. Animals I’ve observed living in harmony and conflict with other species, inextricably from these other species, dependent on one another for their very survival. These are the stories I hope to tell with my cloth.
Biography
My home and studio are in rural Dane County, Wisconsin. Since 1995 I have been working with painting and surface design on silk and other natural fibers. My work has taken me, as Artist-in-Residence, to Rocky Mountain National Park in 2003 and the St. Croix Watershed Research Station in 2008.
