Artist statement
I’m a geometric abstractionist who works in the quilting medium. I use line and color to delineate shapes and space. Sometimes, there’s a sense of landscape in my work, but only in a very abstract way. Most of the time, I’m pursuing some kind of patterning motif. As a structuring device, I like to use operations that run sets of fabrics past one another, forming patterns that owe something to both choice and chance. My design influences include Japanese woodcuts, Prairie School art glass, Bauhaus weavings, Op Art, the Pattern and Decoration movement, spirographs, circuit boards, bit maps, etc. The goal is always to make something that has an immediate wallop and yet bears further scrutiny.
Biography
My work has appeared in the top three national showcases for art quilts during the past two years: Quilt National, Quilt Visions and ArtQuilt Elements. I've also been included in the top international showcase for traditional quilts: the American Quilter's Society Annual Exhibition. And two of my quilts have been included in the Quilt Art Engagement Calendar published annually by the American Quilter's Society.
