Artist statement
Over many years as an artist, I have explored a variety of media and styles. At this stage of my artistic journey, I am fascinated with oil painting and in particular painting from life. The challenge is not to try to duplicate what I see as a snapshot, but to simplify the complexity of the shapes, hues and patterns as well as the relationship between the forms that I observe. When it all works, the finished painting becomes a harmonious composition that expresses the essence of what I am seeing and feeling, whether that is a sense of place, atmosphere, personality or simple beauty.
Art is autobiographical, reflecting the artist's personal experience, interaction and perception of the world. I prefer to paint subjects with which I have a direct connection. It seems that I now see everything in my life as a possible painting. Art for me is a nonverbal language, a means of connecting to my world and sharing that connection with others.
I am always studying, reading, learning, questioning. There is so much to explore and to know. Painters through the ages have found that drawing and painting from life is the greatest teacher. Painting from life trains us to see. It is also the greatest challenge and most fun for me. It has sharpened my perception and has become my means of knowing and celebrating my world. I hope you enjoy the work.
