Artist statement
You can't explain brilliance in 250 words or less but i'll try: These paintings result from pouring ink or enamel onto paper or tyvek that combines with gravity, physics, mathematics and surface quality. I incorporate aesthetic rules to juxtapose visual and phenomenological balance with existential laws of nature. In these paintings I explore the balance between accident and planning.
In the single-sheet “blob” paintings, I distort the intrinsic fluid nature of India ink. These paintings exaggerate the way ink behaves and flirts with the rectangle’s edges and the ink’s surface tension, transcending it into an organic, yet immobile form. The density of the ink varies across the surface of the puddles resulting in areas of wrinkles, seductive abysses and creating a reflective mirror surface.
Biography
Boris Ostrerov is an emerging multidisciplinary artist who makes ink paintings and conceptually driven interactive works. He has exhibited widely and has earned several awards and opportunities including the "Gallery Project" at Tory Folliard Gallery in Milwaukee. In response to this show the art and design critic from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel proposed him as possibly “the most promising new artist.” Ostrerov was also chosen to participate in the highly selective New York Studio Program and later in the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network Mentor Program under mentor artist Santiago Cucullu. Ostrerov earned a BFA from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and is actively working in his studio.
