Artist statement
I like to explore the conflict between function and beauty. When I see something that catches my eye, I like to consider it with two questions. "Why is this interesting and beautiful to me in an artistic sense?" and "Why is this interesting to me as an object with a function?"
As humans we tend to categorize and disregard the multitude of input we take in daily. In my work, I take a moment to reflect on these subjects without filing them, instead examining beyond categories such as "door", "wall" or "pipe." Afterward I put the subject back into its category and ask, "Why does this exist?" Often that question doesn't have a clear answer.
Underlying the conflict is a current of social commentary on the Urban landscape. It is a look at how Urban lifestyle has changed and the richness and character of the city at it's heart. As time and the circumstance of Urban life has changed it has left an indelible feeling of tacit abandonment hanging in the air. Those who have dedicated themselves to the re invigoration of downtown areas struggle against this pall to bring new life to the old heart of the city. I hope my work gives those living in the city a chance and excuse to re-engage their downtown and see it for the wonder and heart of the city that it is and can again be.
