Artist statement
Each oil painting relies solely on my efforts.
I desire pure color. To achieve this, I mix into my paints nothing more than a single agent. This keeps the color from changing as a result of too many additives. A single vehicle allows the paint to flow on smoothly, keeping colors uniform as I mix them. I use a variety of brushes, but most of them are soft and rounded. This helps not only with the placement of color, but allows for the curved, flowing lines that are needed.
My subject matter consists of still-lifes and figures. Music and dance have a great influence on my pieces. I have the need for simplicity and the beauty of fluid movement. My paintings try to express the visual equivalent of a great piece of music or a poem. Every painting is a moment and, at the same time, a part of a larger body that is the piece.
Every brush stroke, every line, comes from necessity. They know where they need to be on the canvas. Intuition and instinct are what I follow.
