Artist statement
My watercolor painting focuses on the beauty of the lakes and skies near my home in Madison, Wisconsin. I live on the isthmus between Lake Monona and Lake Mendota, and I’m often drawn to their open waters to watch the ever-changing light and the interplay of sky and water. I’m inspired by the sense of space and the shifting moods of weather across a wide horizon. I’m also interested in rendering the varied forms of cloudscapes that are visible above the lakes and city streets. Skies have definite shape and structure, and yet they are delicate and transitory; trying to capture these contrasting qualities is a compelling challenge.
Biography
I received early training at the Marchutz School of Art in Aix-en-Provence, France, but am largely self-taught. I’ve exhibited in numerous local and regional shows, including Madison’s Artful Women Show, the Watercolor Wisconsin show at the Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, and the Wisconsin Watercolor Society’s 2016 show at the Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha, WI. My work was included in the 2016 exhibit Honoring Fifty Years of Watercolor Wisconsin at the Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI.
In 2013, I was awarded the Patricia Lee Raichert Memorial Purchase Award for the Racine Art Museum’s permanent collection and Second Place for the 2016 Artful Women Show. I’m a member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society and the Wisconsin Visual Artists association.
