Artist statement
Straight-forward shooting to capture unique moments is very rewarding; however, finding and bringing out the magic in creation is especially challenging and pleasing to me.
The horse is almost always the subject of my image, although rural scenes and nature provide an abundance of inspiration. While I strive to capture the traditional or formal shots, candids can be most rewarding for me and my clients. The picture that drove this point home for me is of the late Col. Alois Podhajsky. It was taken as he said goodbye to his beloved Lippizaners upon his retirement as Director of the Spanish Riding School. The sadness in his and his horses' faces was beautiful, real and unposed, and it touched my heart. Clients find candid shots to be a welcome change, and very often, a wonderful surprise.
I started shooting at dressage and hunter/jumper shows, but these days attend draft horse pulling contests whenever possible. The sheer size and strength, not to mention individual character of these splendid horses are a delight to see and be around. These big horses are also wonderful subjects for various artistic projects.
Besides traditional photography, learning and trying new techniques to create digital artwork with the horse as the subject keeps me challenged. The advent of the digital age has created endless possibilities of expression in art, limited only by one's imagination.
Biography
Horses have always been and will always be my passion. For many years, I worked in the horse industry, managing boarding and training barns, working on breeding farms and public stables. I tried many disciplines from hunter/jumper, to Appaloosas and Quarter Horses, to driving carriages, to working cattle on a ranch, to grooming polo ponies, and finally discovered an enduring, never-ending fascination with dressage, astride and aside (side-saddle).
These days, I reside with my husband and two Jack Russell Terriers in Kimberly. I continue to ride my dressage partner of 11 years, a 22-year-old Thoroughbred gelding; we keep each other young.
