Artist statement
My medium is “hand stitched thread on textile”; defined by whether the textile is a commercial textile, a hand dyed, dye painted textile, or an enhanced textile with rust pigmentation created in my studio. Textile is the canvas on which I work, and hand stitched thread and a tiny needle, is my brush. These simple items create artwork that drapes, reminds us of times past, and invites quiet contemplation. In this day of mechanization and technology, I do 95% of the work on each artwork by hand without the aid of a sewing machine or computer.
Over twenty-nine years of experimentation with these materials has led to a distinctive narrative. The series I developed show a wide range of subject: abstract, geometric, conceptual, and minimalism. Intricate and dense hand stitching gives each work a distinct visual and physical texture with interesting shadow and light play.
Centuries ago, my work would have been referenced as tapestries and considered more desirable and valuable than paintings. That fine craftsmanship and learned skill has been overshadowed by the contemporary age.
Biography
Artist Jean M. Judd of Cushing, Wisconsin has been constructing textile artworks for
over twenty-eight years incorporating
dense hand stitching which gives visual and physical texture to her work. Her work includes pieced work using commercial fabrics as well as rust pigmentation and non-traditional dyeing techniques. Each piece is unique and her work can be found in many private art collections in the United States, Canada, Europe, as well as the US Embassy in Lima, Peru.
She exhibits her award-winning artwork nationally in juried fine art exhibitions and is represented by several fine art galleries across the United States. She is the author of several books describing her processes, artistic philosophy, and experiences with artist residencies.
