Artist statement
My work is functional earthenware pottery with complex abstract imagery. For it, I invented new design and printmaking techniques for ceramics. These techniques combine the ancient book art of marbling, modern and traditional oil painting materials like tempera and industrial surfactants, and design software. I blend the computer’s capacity to create and alter imagery with the ancient practice of paper cutting using a cutter/plotter machine. These innovations create new marks that I find exciting, full of the emotive power of colorful, liquid, open marks.
For me, they are the product of a new imagination; one that sees science, technology, and art as a single stream of thought. This thought rises and wells up with much usefulness, inspiration, and joy. I hope that you enjoy using them as much as I enjoy making them.
