Artist statement
My art is an expression of reality as I feel it: a process of responding to materials and ideas.
When working with geometric abstraction, the subject is both explicit and non-representational, allowing for multiple interpretations. This ambiguity allows me to establish a 'reality' of internal logic within the painting that parallels my personal thoughts and experiences. My understanding of the painting's meaning develops as the work progresses.
The grid is a foundation of my work, as it evolves from simple line into patterns and forms. I explore relationships between these forms and their surrounding spaces by varying the colors and patterns that define them.
I work with watercolor on paper because it inspires a range of technical and expressive possibilities. The 'watercolor effect' blends the spontaneity of chance inherent to the flow of water with the suggestion of precision from the geometric patterns. I think of color as a spectrum of light that defines and illuminates forms. This quality of light is enhanced by the interaction of transparent washes of color over white paper.
Biography
Laura Draeger is an award-winning artist that continues to show her work regionally and nationally. She received an M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; and has taught Art in public school and university settings.
