Artist statement
These prints and drawings are the result of hours walking in the woods and by streams and rivers in northern Wisconsin noticing the grand landscape and the smallest wonder of a seed or pebble. I understand the connection of the grand and the small while immersed in the calmness and safety of the tangle of the wilderness.
The process of making these drawings and prints is an intuitive meditation on these relationships. I don't have a preconceived image when I start drawing--only a thought or feeling which may change as the drawing progresses. Many of these have been partially or wholly erased and usually end up in a different orientation than when they began. The process of my own intuition and instinct became my true subject matter at times.
Some of the words and ideas I hold in my mind while working are growth, regeneration, safety, movement and power. A couple of the formal elements I relate to the landscape are the tangle of lines that make up the growth of the woods and the shifting spatial relationships that come with traveling through the dense woods.
Biography
Although I never took art classes in high school or grade school I have a B.S. in art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an M.F.A. from the University of Tennessee, both in drawing and printmaking. I've been exhibiting my work nationally for about 12 years and I held a variety of creative jobs during that time including museum preperator, digital sound technician, animator, graphic designer, systems administrator and teacher. My current job is as Assistant Professor of Art at Northland College in Ashland. My main motivation in life is to keep learning and I believe making art and teaching are two of the best ways to satisfy my need for learning.
