Artist statement
Basket making was an accident. On a whim, I took a class several years ago and suddenly I was hooked. I had always enjoyed needle arts, but basketry was something different. My first baskets were very traditional in form and material. As I explored the art of basketry further, I started incorporating non-traditional materials into my baskets: wire, metal, beads, buttons, waxed linen and various other fibers.
Eventually I discovered watercolor paper. Paper allows me an infinite amount of possibilities for expression with color, texture and shape. I start by creating a design on the paper with a variety of techniques (paints, dyes, inks or gluing or sewing other items to the surface). The paper is then cut into strips for weaving. Sometimes I create the paper and weave with a specific basket idea in mind. Other times, I simply began creating the surface of the paper and follow the design where it takes me. Either way, it's always a wonderful adventure.
