Artist statement
Bonnie has a long-term commitment to dynamic, creative, balanced design. She obtained an advanced degree in urban design/planning and environmental sciences, and worked on master planning and design for resorts, parks, college
campuses, and urban spaces in NY, OH, CO and MN. She also designed an exclusive line of high-end accessories sold at better stores and art galleries nationwide.
It was glass and metal that was always most enthralling. Mesmerized by the clarity, color and the light playing its games with the mediums, she dove in: from glass blowing at the Toledo Museum of Art; stained glass; neon at Minnesota Institute of Art; and building her glass-fusing studio in a former dairy barn in Wisconsin. Fusing glass allows control of the design outcome, through integrating glass shapes that remain intact in the kiln at specific temperatures. The work often has themes inspired by nature, science, or philosophy. Much of her work is water inspired. Her urban design background shows itself in the ‘scapes’ that appear. Visual textures and hand-created elements are formed from glass drippings in the kiln at 1400 to 1700 degrees, and hand-burnishing textures on aluminum and steel. Since 1990, she has also been an environmental advocate for business sustainability, via EcoSource Inc. This is demonstrated in her pieces.
Bonnie integrates the burnished metal shapes into her interior wall art, landscape sculptures and aerial sculptures. Her aerial art pieces are lightweight, appear to ‘float’, and provide brilliant color to atriums and skylights. Bonnie’s reflective and transparent glass/ metal designs for hospitals, universities, restaurants, and residences are award-winning. She has taught workshops and lectured at universities on the importance and significance of art in public spaces.
