Artist statement
Painting is my attempt at preserving experiences of being present in the natural world or otherwise, of having an interaction, rescuing from anonymity a fragment of the unfathomable complexity and beauty of a leaf, or the sky, because it’s all part of our current home. I grew up in a family that spent a lot of time outdoors. We had a generous garden every year, horses for a while, and we spent much time canoeing, hiking, biking, and playing in the wilderness. As children we had a lot of freedom to wander, play, and dream. These works reflect moments on the prairie next to the rivers where I live. It is often the quality of illumination present that draws me in.
