Artist statement
The Zen of Concrete
My work is inspired by the urban landscape and the ironic interplay between man-made elements and the lyrical forces of nature.
I have submitted a series of "Sidewalk and Grid Paintings."
Through minimalist abstraction, my work invites the viewer to contemplate ordinary sidewalks, grates and grids for insights into the ephemera of existence.
In the grid paintings, I challenge the audience to meditate on a paradox--at first, all the squares seem the same, but on closer, more intimate inspection, each square is unique unto itself. Like an answer to a Zen koan, the grid paintings are a Cartesian metaphor for seeing the universal and the particular of life at the same time.
