Artist statement
The building blocks of the world inspire my work. I draw from the wealth of information found in the ways natural and manufactured objects are constructed. I look for a presumably unintentional byproduct of beauty in manufactured objects and their similarities to natural forms. The truss of a bridge, the scales of a fish or the tiles on a roof become the basis for building sculptural form in metal. Rather than referencing any particular forms in my sculptures, I look for a thoughtful method of construction which determines the form and therefore the content of the piece.
Biography
I was born in Fond du Lac and first started working with metal while attending UW-Stout in 1990. After completing a BFA in metalsmithing, I worked as a jeweler in Vail, Colorado, for four and a half years. In the fall of 1999, in an effort to expand my skills and reinvigorate my interest in art, I attended a two-month class at the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. I ended up staying at Penland for two years as a recipient of the core student scholarship, which allowed me to take classes in a variety of mediums. In 2001, I enrolled in the metalsmithing program at The Cranbrook Academy of Art. After completing my MFA from Cranbrook, I moved back to my home state of Wisconsin and am currently making contemporary sculpture, furniture and jewelry.
