Artist statement
A friend once told me that I find the beauty in things and put it down on paper! I started drawing about 12 years ago and have taken several classes: drawing and several on pastels and some with watercolor. My favorite way to work is outside. In winter, I work from photos but also spend time drawing the big ships that come in for winter layup. My subjects vary: outdoor water scenes, historical old barns, water tanks, ships, sailboats and even an old feed mill. Good times on a rowing team and an archeological dig provide good subjects as well as travels out West. The local scenery and figures of people being tourists are of interest.
I like to throw some acrylic on the paper to give a texture or fast background to a painting first or even gold ink! Then pastels--the soft ones--are layered & moved over the paper until they make a design & convey my intent.
Biography
I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a degree in physical education. I've been a mom as my most important job and also worked in gift shops, a bank, and on an archaeology crew one summer! I paint whenever possible, which is several days a week.
My work can be seen at the Paintbox Gallery in Ephraim. It is also shown in the Door County Art League Galleries at The Bridge in Egg Harbor, Maxwelton Braes in Bailey's Harbor, and at Cafe Sole' in Ephraim. My work has been juried in at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay for several years, the Peninsula Art School Midwest Juried in 2003, and by invitation at The Francis Hardy Gallery in Ephraim in 2003.
