Artist statement
I am a realist. My artistic philosophy is found in my paintings. I strive for visual rather than literary depth. If my paintings need interpretation, then I have failed as an artist and communicator. I believe art is communication. I want the viewer to see a subject as I see it. Therefore, the message or subject, however simple or complex, must be stated in a manner that crosses any people-related barriers. My language is reality-defined and enhanced by color, draftsmanship and composition, within the confines of the medium.
Biography
Art education:
Saturday art classes at Bradley University, Peoria, Ill., during high school. Also studied with Ed Nicholson, a full-time fine artist and portrait painter. As a high school senior, I won one of 63 National Scholastic Awards Competition scholarships in 1948. Frank Young, Sr., the president of The American Academy of Art in Chicago, was one of the judges of the competition and chose me for his school.
Graphic Art Career:
After art school in 1950, I entered the world of commercial art and became proficient in design, production, illustration and photo retouching. In 1969, I started my own business as Emrick & Associates. In 1976, I became one of the founders of Ads Infinitum, an advertising agency. In sixteen years, our agency won more than 100 awards for excellence in advertising.
Art in retirement:
In 1992, I "retired" to pursue a more leisurely lifestyle and to devote more time to painting.
