Artist statement
My current works began as a means of exploring and making visual emotions and physical events of life that are often unable to be seen. From my first experimental and reactionary paintings, I have developed a strong body of work that revolves around and is literally built up upon the grid and universal icons of the circle, square and house. Moving away from this simple geometry, I have also used other icons, such as guns, skulls and birds, all of which deal with social issues affecting my life and the world. I have begun to explore the need for a deeper understanding and reflection on spirituality in one's life.
My works use simple geometric shapes that are easily read by the viewer. The work is meant to invite people to approach the works and always investigate further, to draw meaning beyond the simple geometry and forms.
My works stem from a need for personal religious, spiritual and reflective exploration. I limit the visual complexities of images and create readable works that begin to use very common and universal icons in a new way, and shed a different light on common images.
I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1995 (cum laude, with an emphasis in graphic design and certification in K-12 art education). I earned my Master of Arts degree in visual studies, magna cum laude, from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee in 2002.
