Artist statement
These paintings are inspired by the myriad textures, patterns and colors found in nature, and the art of calligraphy. A sustained relationship between painting and writing exists in each work. The process used in this work involves a combination of techniques, employing oil, varnish, enamel, inks and powered pigments in many layers. Forgoing brushes for alternative tools, the artist inscribes the highly prepared surface with dense layers of hand drawn marks. The results is a surface of nuance and mystery, of substance turned essence. They are complex works of depth and great individuality, which continue to challenge the audience even after many viewings.
The paintings need to be experienced in person to be truly appreciated. They can be seen at Gallery 218, 218 S. Second St., Milwaukee, Wis., or by contacting the artist.
