Artist statement
I enjoy taking cold, industrial steel, then cutting, bending, grinding and shaping it into something entirely new. With care, I give the cold, gray metal warmth, movement and feeling. The pieces can become light and airy or have an air of somber heaviness.
Metal is so versatile that one can convey age and history or youth and vitality. From authentic rust to bare metal to cheerful paint, the finish of a piece is an integral part of the whole. When an idea takes shape in my mind, I picture it in color; each sculpture seems to demand a certain presentation. Although many designs have first defined themselves to me in my imagination, some have come after a period of time contemplating pieces of metal in my studio and experimenting with different ways of combining them until a sculpture "appears."
Metal sculpture is an exciting challenge, with each day bringing a new idea, a fresh mental picture, a mood to convey or a statement to make. I hope my pieces bring enjoyment to all who see them and own them.
Biography
Growing up on a farm presented me with many situations where welding was a necessary practical skill. My welding techniques were further developed in my educational experience. Over time I began to appreciate the creative potential of metal. One day I took found objects from our farm and created my first metal sculpture. My body of work has expanded to include modern as well as rustic pieces. They are usually painted in bright colors or flat black. The sculptures range in size from tabletop to seven feet tall. The smaller pieces are best indoors, with the larger ones more appropriate for yard or commercial applications.
I have exhibited my work in Windows of Eau Claire and at the Chippewa Valley Cultural Association. I have also created numerous commissioned pieces in addition to my own work, with the largest being installed in the Chippewa Valley Technical College.
