Artist statement
The depth of our inner lives and the shaping of our soul into an identity that reflects a truth about ourselves is of great interest to me. I am also drawn to the connections we make and the value we place on various things that define who we are as individuals. Essentially, what it boils down to is a desire for an authentic self. A difficult task within the confines and demands of everyday distractions but a task that is necessary to living a quality life. It is not a search but rather a willingness to experience and to contemplate. A desire to find meaning and purpose from those experiences. My art is an integral part of this. Giving permanence to the incorporeal to acknowledge its importance. It is through my work that I find purpose and from which I've come to articulate my own voice.
Manipulating the human form and constructing events from various motifs allows me to visualize ideas and to give them vitality. It is finding that energy and connection that builds meaningful compositions. My desire is to give a visual presence to events and experiences that linger in my subconscious. Drawing is an opportunity where these events transpire and manifest themselves into form and direction. The work becomes an event in itself. Like an active culture, the atmosphere becomes malleable and the surface versatile. My process is highly intuitive and is primarily a means to grasp and express what is truly essential to me.
