Artist statement
Concealing Spaces. Rediscovering. Building. Describing. Excavating. Remembering. Time.
My two-dimensional works on paper have been driven by an ongoing dialog between landscape, description of space, memory, accidental and intentional mark, materials and process. This takes the form of abstraction, complex/impossible space and described detail.
Densely layered materials and processes: etching, collagraph and lithography are interwoven with drawn and painted mark. The landscape of space is described on multiple planes. Various levels/layers of mark making create a physical sense of depth within the two-dimensional surface. From the surface, the viewer's vantage point, openings to deeper space, general information and moments of detail give the sense of movement, travel, things recalled over time.
My compositions contain references to experiences that I have had with industrial landscapes and structures, though not directly depicted. Instead the structure leaves one with a sense of colliding, breaking down of space, mystery, stacking, and the tension between chaos and order.
