Artist statement
Lady of the Lake Niagara Escarpment Series
The fish imagery is from a series I am exploring that defends the Niagara escarpment as a sacred place fraught with threats to its integrity – fracking, oil-shale mining, invasive species, pollution from run-off, oil sands exploitation, human intrusion, climate change, aging oil pipelines and over-harvesting of fisheries.
The Lady of the Lake is St. Niagara whose very bones are made of the stuff of the life-giving escarpment because she eats the fish and drinks the waters of her habitat. Her symbol is an arm bone and her animal familiar is the Whitefish.
Biography
After my career in graphic arts and public relations, I returned to hand printmaking in 1999 under Christine Style, UW-GB. I was co-founder of Main Street Art Works co-op in Hilbert, WI and shared studio and gallery space there with other artists from 2003 to 2014. For more than 15 years, I have created mixed media prints, sculptures and encaustic paintings. My work has appeared in national and international exhibitions and has been acquired for the permanent collections of Bellin Health, Green Bay; St Norbert College, De Pere; and Northwestern Mutual, Milwaukee. I currently work out of my studio at Blue Door Artworks in De Pere, WI. I am currently represented by Idea Gallery, Egg Harbor, WI.
