Artist statement
Nature moves me. To be standing on the edge of Lake Superior watching the sun rise, or to be belly-down in wet grass making an image of a new spring flower, provides me with incredible joy. My goal is to, perhaps, give viewers of my images a glimpse into how I felt when I tripped the shutter.
I think the philosophy surrounding my work can be found in the profound words of Henry David Thoreau: "The question is not what you look at; the question is what you see."
Biography
Dave Miess started making photographs over 25 years ago. His passion for making images has also been combined with a love of backpacking, canoeing, biking and camping. While he has explored nature in different parts of the United States and Canada, his favorite images come from his geographic backyard--the northwoods of Wisconsin and the Upper Great Lakes region. Miess has won numerous awards for his images.
