Artist statement
I use photography as a medium for personal expression and interpret the subject before the lens as a statement. The nature of the statement is subject related, involves the environment of the subject, and includes aspects of the subject that are personally compelling. My intentions are to evoke associations between the viewer and the subject such as a sense of time or place, stir emotion and involve the viewer with the "fabric" of the subject.
Nature is an important focus for my work but a wide range of subjects is photographed. My images range from realism to abstraction and are shot on 35mm slide film. In-camera techniques are used for image manipulation and ambient light for illumination.
Biography
I am a frequent exhibitor in venues within the greater Madison area, including juried regional exhibits. Other exhibit venues include the Palm Springs Museum, San Diego Natural History Museum and other California locations. My work has also appeared in several photography circuits in Europe.
Published images include book and magazine covers and photographs within the pages of National Geographic, National Wildlife, Science and other magazines. Many of my images have been used to illustrate scientific articles and books (non-photography subjects).
