Artist statement
The Mobile Process: A mobile is an artistic rendering of a simple machine, a free form combination of weights, levers and fulcrums that convert an essentially two-dimensional object into a kinetic, three-dimensional form.
I have developed a style of mobile that I believe is unique and I designed and built the tools that allow me produce them. They are intended for indoor display.
The materials used are 6061-T6 aluminum for light weight and strength, 308 stainless steel hand-turned rings as connectors, heavy fish line, cable or stainless steel rod as a tether and a thrust bearing for the ability to rotate.
Finishes are often a mechanically applied texture. If color is desired on large projects, a powder coat process is used. On residential scale work, I may apply the paint. A combination of paint and texture is also very attractive.
