Artist statement
Painting is a process of translation for me. I enjoy the struggle to interpret the "real world" with the visual overlays my mind adds to it, such as bits of whimsy or shapes you see out of the corner of your eye, an animal smiling, a woman finding peace in a moment. I like to paint the elusive moments of fullness and awareness in the everyday. So while I may paint a still life, I try to capture the magical quality of the moment. With acrylics and watercolors, I am painting my emotional response to the world around me.
My grandmother was an oil painter so I grew up watching the process of creating. Though I dabbled in painting when younger, I did not apply myself to art until my children were mostly grown.
I came to Door County to learn from the artists here and become part of the art community. I believe critiquing by friends helped me grow as an artist; it keeps me vital and connected.
Last year, I bought an old cheese factory and put a gallery in the bottom floor. After being represented for six years by other galleries, it seemed time to recycle this old building and make a space for my work. I am thrilled to be painting and expect to be challenged every day by the process of translating the information gathered from my eyes and mind to the canvas.
