Artist statement
I have been interested in color and design since I was a child, but it took many years of garment and interior sewing before I explored quilting. As a quilter, my work has transitioned from traditional to creative fabric art pieces. I love to look at things in an unusual way, use unique color combinations or unexpected design elements.
"Once your mind is stretched by a new idea, it will never again return to its original size": This quote from Oliver Wendell Homes has definitely influenced my life and my quilting. I try to continually challenge myself to go beyond what I already know and what I have already done. Inspired by the beauty of nature in Wisconsin, there is a wealth of choices to be explored. My art quilts are a time for experimenting with themes and approaches, creating my own designs and using commercial fabrics to their most creative advantage. My constant question is "but what happens if...?"
Two basic themes that I see reflected in my textile art are strong use of color and exploring basic shapes. I have always been very interested in color, using color and understanding how it reflects our lives. It is most interesting to see viewers edged out of their comfort zone with a new color combination. Rather than "photographic" artwork, I enjoy playing with the subject by abstracting it to a more basic shape and using a variety of textured and patterned fabrics yet keeping an element of the realistic.
