Artist statement
A self-taught photographer, I focus on two distinct subjects: Wisconsin landscapes and abstract-appearing natural images found in ice. Each requires different equipment and particular skills.
I create both intimate and expansive landscapes using a Sinar large-format view camera using 4x5" sheet film. Frequently I combine long exposures and frontal tilt to achieve great sharpness and detail. My challenge is to create an image that not only speaks to me, but to others as well and, for now, Wisconsin provides me more than enough inspiration.
Not every winter presents opportunities for my abstract-appearing ice images. However, when our lakes freeze over in calm, snow-free conditions, I criss-cross the frozen surface looking for patterns I can turn into images. Once found, I use a Nikon F4 camera and macro lens, tripod and self-timer, and make the images while reflecting sunlight onto the objects in the ice. These images can be seen in my inter-galactic appearing "Inner Space" series, as well as the often Rorschach-like "Patterns" series.
My work ranges in size from 8x10" to 24x48" and larger. When I combine images to form a diptych or triptych, I prefer not to "stitch" them together but rather to emphasize the fact that they are the product of several sheets of film.
I mount, mat and frame my own work using archival materials. I closely supervise the printing of my work or, more frequently, print my own. All images are printed in a manner providing between 65 and 100+ years of stability under glass.
