Artist statement
The patterns in my sculpture are symbols used to describe rocks and other landforms, as depicted on geologic maps. I find the use of pattern as description intriguing, and I like to think of my work as an abstraction of these symbols. The layering in my pieces describes the chaotic order nature presents to us. I like the complication of viewing one shape and pattern through another.
My small-scale metal sculpture is made from thin sheet aluminum, aluminum bar and rod. I fabricate them entirely in my studio. I first cut and shape the individual units. They are then primed, painted, decorated and lastly, they are riveted together. I work with paper in the same manner I do aluminum. After painting, I cut and shape pieces, then glue them together.
