Artist statement
My work consists of a series of sculptured garments, each acting as a metaphor for a specific attitude or custom of our culture. I focus on garments as portraiture, commentary and satire.
Beginning with a welding torch and quarter-inch steel rod, I weld an armature that can function as an internal support or play a definitive role in the detailing of the piece. The next step is to collect and integrate common everyday materials and work them into a fabric that covers the armature. This meticulously worked surface helps define the meaning of the piece. The life-size garments tend to draw in the viewer. In return the viewer completes the process by bringing a personal interpretation to the piece.
