Artist statement
The organic textures found in nature exist in paradoxical relationship to the surfaces and structures we build in our daily lives. They are the foundation for my paintings and collages. The order we seek to create is in a dynamic tension with the passion and movement of our souls. It constantly gives testimony that there is something more beneath our surfaces. I explore this tension and balance as I create images that might best be described as internal landscapes and spiritual contemplations.
I typically work on paper (often hand-cast from paper pulp), using natural pigments mixed with egg tempera or wax (encaustic). These natural mediums have been passed down through generations of artists. The process of crushing and mixing the pigment as well as preparing the paper evokes a connection with many age-old traditions of art making. It embraces a sense of history even as it finds its place within the ethos of the contemporary art culture.
Biography
I have worked the past 15 years with public broadcasting. It has led me to contemplate the power of public images and their ability to affect change. I have also spent time in both South Africa and in Mozambique during critical moments in their history. These experiences have informed my work as I've thought about our public and personal narratives and what "truths" we choose to believe about our world. These stories are like constantly shifting tectonic plates. My work runs across some of the "fault lines" and I'm captured by the earthquake moments.
I received my MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989. Along with presenting at seminars and workshops, I exhibit my painting and collage work regularly both locally and nationally. I live in Middleton, Wis., and am represented by Grace Chosy Gallery in Madison and High Street Gallery in Mineral Point.
