Artist statement
The cityscapes and interiors that I paint are more than buildings. They are memories of the past and symbols of my life. Architecture gives me a feeling of the life inside the building and triggers imagined impressions of the lives therein. The bungalow house and architecture from the 1920s is especially that way for me. It is the style of house I was brought up in and was all around my neighborhood. I use these buildings as a way of expressing of the way I feel at the moment I am painting them. My paintings are done from imagination, life and photos.
Some of my influences are my teacher, Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Mass. Henry taught us plein air painting and was one of the most influential teachers in the 20th century. Another painter from that region is Edward Hopper, whose paintings I continue to return to for inspiration.
