Old World Wisconsin Old World Wisconsin, located near Eagle, is America's largest outdoor museum of rural life. Visitors can stroll along paths and trails and view nearly seventy historic structures that were painstakingly researched and carefully moved to the site. Immigrants of many nationalities helped Wisconsin grow during the 19th and early 20th centuries, the period Old World Wisconsin focuses on. Paine Art Center and Gardens Construction on the Tudor Revival-style mansion began in 1927. It was to be a lavish summer home for Nathan Paine and Jessie Kimberly. Since 1948, the building has been home to Oshkosh's Paine Art Center and Gardens. Visitors can enjoy the art collection, which is especially strong in American art and the Barbizon school of French painters, or stroll through enchanting gardens. First Capitol: The birthplace of Wisconsin territorial government Before there was the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, the original capitol of the Wisconsin Territory stood near Belmont in southwestern Wisconsin. Stonefield Operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society, Stonefield is located in Cassville in southwestern Wisconsin. The site recreates frontier life in the 1890s and early 1900s.
